Grilled eggs are this summer’s most fascinating cookout trend

Long gone are the days of cooking only burgers, hotdogs and steaks on a grill for a family cookout. Grilling connoisseurs are stepping up their game by cooking everything from bread to dessert on the grill. And, just when we thought we’ve seen everything, a new idea comes along and we’re blown away.

Early this summer, a video of someone grilling whole eggs went mega viral, perhaps because it seemed too good to be true. Is it really possible to cook a whole egg, shell and all, on a grill? There were plenty of comments from doubters and fans alike.

“i just imagined the disappointment of my guests when they lift the grill lid and see smoked eggs,” one comment read. Another mocked the idea saying, “next time you are cooking noodles, throw a cake in the oven.”

But, we’re here to tell you that grilled eggs are the best thing since sliced bread. And many people agree. We’ve found that charcoal grills and smokers have the best result. The smokey flavor saturates the egg and makes for a delicious addition to potato salad, deviled eggs, and many other bbq side dishes. Or, you can enjoy it as a stand alone snack.

While the idea seems to have just caught on this summer, there are numerous videos on youtube of egg grilling experiments that date back nearly a decade. All we can say is, what took so long for this brilliant idea to go viral?

Can’t wait to give it a try? Here’s how to do it.

Heat up your grill to around 350 degrees f. Place room temperature eggs directly on the grill and close the lid. Allow to cook for 15 minutes (more or less depending on how you like your yolks). Remove from the grill and place in an ice bath for 10 minutes. Peel and enjoy!
